UK Statutes – Document Types

Acts of Parliament are often too large for convenient handling as a single document in a database. For the UK Statutes database, Justis Publishing therefore creates a separate document for the preamble and for each section and for each schedule.

You can click the blue “Outline” tab, and then use the Outline to either view the entire Act as a single document, or to jump to the preamble or to an individual section or schedule.

Preamble

The Preamble documents in the UK Statutes database contain the Title, Year, Preamble and Made fields. The Preamble field contains a summary of the provisions of the Act. The Made field contains the date on which the Statute was made. The Title is shown in blue and underlined, indicating a hypertext link; click the Title to return to the Arrangement of Sections.

Cardiff Bay Barrage Act 1993

1993 CHAPTER 42

Sections and Schedules

The sections and schedules contain the main body of an Act. In the UK Statutes database, a separate document has been created for each section and for each schedule. The layout is similar to that in the printed version of the Act, including side notes.

References to other Acts of Parliament and to Statutory Instruments are shown in blue and underlined and are hypertext links. Position your mouse pointer so that it changes to a hand, and then click to display the appropriate document.

You can use the green JustCite tabs to see which legislation is amended by, amends or implements the section or schedule.

When an entire section or schedule has been repealed, this is indicated on the green “Status” tab:

Repealed indicator

If you want to retrieve only a particular section or schedule, you can enter its document reference in the Reference field on the Search In Legislation screen. If you want to retrieve all of the sections and schedules of an Act, you can search for the complete short title in the Reference field.
